Director of the State Hermitage Museum

Official reason

Mikhail Piotrovsky is the long-time Director of the State Hermitage Museum and a close associate of Vladimir Putin, he has actively supported and justified Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. He publicly endorsed Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, likening the global dissemination of Russian culture to a so-called “special military operation”, directly alluding to the invasion. Mikhail Piotrovsky backed Russian legislation enabling the incorporation of cultural items from Ukrainian museums into Russia’s State Museum Fund. Under his leadership, the Hermitage has conducted unauthorised archaeological excavations in occupied Crimea, including the destruction of protected Ukrainian heritage sites, thereby serving the Kremlin’s goal of legitimising its territorial claims under the guise of academic work. Therefore, Mikhail Piotrovsky is supporting actions or policies which undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.
