Today the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against Morteza Tamaddon, an Iranian government official, for being involved in censorship and other activities that limit the freedom of expression and freedom of assembly of Iran’s citizens. Morteza Tamaddon is currently the head of the Tehran Provincial Public Security Council.  As former Governor-General of Tehran Province, he used his authority to penalize the exercise of and limit Iranians’ freedom of expression and assembly following the disputed 2009 elections in Iran.

[Archive] Executive Order 13628 of October 9, 2012, “Authorizing the Implementation of Certain Sanctions Set Forth in the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act of 2012 (TRA) and Additional Sanctions with Respect to Iran,” (“E.O. 13628”) implements certain statutory requirements of the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act of 2012 (the “TRA”), including amendments to the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) and the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act of 2010 (CISADA). Specifically, E.O. 13628 implements the requirements of Sections 204, 402, and 403 of the TRA. In addition, consistent with Section 218 of the TRA, Section 4 of E.O. 13628 prohibits foreign subsidiaries (defined below) of United States persons from knowingly violating the Iranian Transactions Regulations, E.O. 13599, section 5 of E.O. 13622, or Section 12 of E.O. 13628, and provides for civil penalties on the U.S. parent company for any such violations.
